St. Theresa
faculty has written and implemented a program to teach the Spanish language for grades K-8. Each grade level has defined sequential goals to meet the needs of all students. We begin in Kindergarten, First, and Second grade with the introduction of, pronunciation and enunciation of Spanish vocabulary. The expectations in the middle grades include reading, writing, and speaking in conversational settings. The ultimate goal is for the upper grades (6-8) to speak, write, and read Spanish at a proficiency level allowing them to be enrolled in advanced Spanish at the high school.
St. Theresa School provides a concise curriculum that effectively organizes and integrates important Spanish language skills. It provides a Spanish curriculum that prepares students for continued study and for communication in a variety of school, home, and work settings. This curriculum supports our mission statement to create an atmosphere that combines structure and creativity, while instilling an enthusiasm for life-long learning.
The Spanish program emphasizes, a wide variety of skill-building strategies that encompass all learning styles, thus creating an inclusive environment. Students are encouraged and invited to participate in understanding the Spanish cultural traditions. This is accomplished in the classroom as well as field trips to restaurants where students order in Spanish. This is also expanded through
cultural celebrations that include;
Mexico's Independence Day, Dio De Los Muertos (The day of the dead), Our Lady of Guadalupe, Las Posadas, Los Tres Reyes Magos (Epiphany), and 5 de Mayo.
